How to set up your lights
Succulents require high-intensity light, typically 6–12 hours daily, to maintain compact shapes and vibrant colors. South or west-facing windows are ideal indoors, providing maximum sun exposure. If succulents stretch or turn pale green, they need more light, often requiring 6500K full-spectrum LED grow lights placed 6–18 inches away.
When moving succulents outdoors or under grow lights after being in low light, introduce them slowly to avoid sunburn. Start with 1-2 hours of direct sun, gradually increasing the time over 2-3 weeks.
Key Lighting Requirements
- Duration: 12–14 hours of light daily is recommended for optimal indoor growth, allowing a dark period for CO2 intake.
- Intensity: High light is necessary (20,000–50,000+ lux) for most, while some tolerate lower light (7,000–15,000 lux).
- Window Orientation: South-facing windows are best for intense light, followed by East (morning sun) and West.
- Rotating: Rotate pots weekly to prevent lopsided growth, as they will lean toward the light source.
Signs of Improper Lighting
- Too Little Light: The plant “stretches” (etiolation), becoming tall, spindly, and pale as it searches for light.
- Too Much Light: Leaves may turn white, yellow, or develop brown, crunchy scorched spots.
Using Grow Lights
- Full-spectrum white LED grow lights (5000K-6500K) are best, as they mimic sunlight without the purple “blurple” hue.
- Distance: LED lights should generally be 18–24 inches away, while fluorescent lights should be closer, about 6–12 inches.
- Setup: Use a timer to ensure consistent daily light exposure.
